The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) launched its three-day High-Level Dialogue on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) on 30 July 2025 at Ole Sereni Hotel, Nairobi, under the theme:

“Translating UNSCR 1325 into Action: Driving Regional Security and Global Commitments in Eastern Africa.”

Chief Guest Hon. Hanna Wendot Cheptumo, Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, and Children's Services of the Republic of Kenya, officially opened the dialogue. In her keynote remarks, she underscored Kenya’s commitment to embedding gender equality at all levels of peace and security work.

“This gathering reaffirms our shared resolve to place women at the heart of peace and security in Eastern Africa,” she said.

“Let this forum serve as a catalyst for renewed action and shared responsibility.”

EASF Director Brig. Gen. (Rtd.) Paul Kahuria Njema welcomed delegates and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to inclusive peace operations.

“Sustainable peace demands the meaningful participation of women, not as a notion, but a necessity,” he stated.

He also highlighted EASF’s efforts to mainstream gender into its operational frameworks and capacity-building programs.

Dr. Leah Barasa, Head of the EASF Civilian Component, emphasized that inclusion must go beyond presence:

“Women must not only be at the table, but shape, lead, and monitor peace processes.”

She called for stronger institutional support, accountability, and investment in women-led solutions.

The opening was attended by Lady Justice (Rtd.) Effie Owuor, Co-Chair of AU FemWise-Africa, Amb. Walter Maina, AU Chairperson’s Representative, EU delegates, and senior officials from EASF Member States.

The dialogue continues through 1 August 2025, focusing on practical solutions to enhance gender-responsive peacebuilding in the Region.
