The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) proudly concluded its three-day High-Level Dialogue on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) on 1st August 2025 in Nairobi, under the theme: “Translating UNSCR 1325 into Action: Driving Regional Security and Global Commitments in Eastern Africa.”

Speaking on behalf of Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed underscored the key message of the Conference: “Peace is not sustainable without the active and meaningful participation of women.”

Chairing the Conference, Somalia’s Aliza Mohamed Ibrahim reaffirmed member states’ commitment, stating: “Let us carry the outcomes of this dialogue forward with urgency and purpose. The communities we serve are counting on us.”

EASF Director Brig Gen (Rtd.) Paul Kahuria Njema highlighted the region’s historical and ongoing leadership of women in peacebuilding: “Women are not victims—they are powerful agents of resilience and transformation. Inclusion is not optional. It is essential.”

Dr. Leah Barasa, Head of the EASF Civilian Component, emphasized the strategic importance of integrating gender in peace operations, calling for increased deployment, gender parity, and institutionalized women’s leadership.

The African Union, represented by Mr. Walter Maina, lauded EASF’s leadership, urging all stakeholders to move beyond words to “implementation that places women at the heart of peace and security processes.”
