Policy Organs' Meetings: Chiefs of Defence Convene

The virtual Policy Organs' Meeting of the Chiefs of Defence Staff (CDFs) of the Eastern Africa region commenced on 6th October 2021. The meeting is being coordinated from the Secretariat in Karen, Nairobi.

Opening the CDFs' meeting was the Director, Brig Gen Getachew Shiferaw Fayisa. During the opening session, Brig Gen Fayisa thanked EASF Member States for the continued support they have been according the Standby Force as it continues to execute its mandate of ensuring peace and stability in the region. He informed the CDFs that the Secretariat has continued to implement its activity plan despite various challenges including those posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The representative from the African Union Air Vice Marshall Brian Chikonzo thanked EASF leadership for inviting the AU to the virtual meeting. He encouraged the Standby Force to continue with its work and assured the participants that the African Union would always be ready to support peace initiatives on the entire continent.

The CDFs meeting will be followed by the final meeting of the Council of Ministers for Defence and Security of the Eastern Africa region, scheduled to take place on 7th October 2021.
