Mogadishu, Somalia – 19 July 2025 – The 34th Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers of Defense and Security of the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) officially opened today in Mogadishu, hosted by the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The session marks the final phase of a week-long series of EASF Policy Organs Meetings, which began on 15 July with the Experts Working Group, followed by the Chiefs of Defense and Security session.

Chaired by Somalia’s Minister of Defense, H.E. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, the meeting brought together Defense and Security Ministers from EASF Member States, senior officials, and international partners. In his opening remarks, Minister Fiqi reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to regional peace and security and highlighted the importance of collective action in confronting shared challenges.

EASF Director, Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Paul Kahuria Njema, described the session as historic, being the first ministerial-level EASF meeting hosted in Somalia. He commended Somalia for its hospitality and resilience, and emphasized the strategic value of the Policy Organs platform.

Speaking on behalf of the Friends of EASF, the Senior Adviser with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and Coordinator of the International Advisory and Coordination Staff (IACS) Mr. Kenneth Albret, conveyed appreciation for the Director’s leadership, noting:

“The Friends of EASF highly appreciate the openness, cooperation, and strong leadership demonstrated by the Director.”

He further stressed the importance of sustained support from Member States to ensure EASF’s long-term sustainability and operational readiness.

The Council is expected to conclude its deliberations later today, addressing key agenda items including force readiness, resource mobilization, and preparations for upcoming field exercises. The outcomes will guide EASF’s strategic direction as it continues to promote peace, security, and integration in Eastern Africa.
