Enhancing Peace and Security in the Eastern Africa Region

EASF Takes Part in AU's Consultative Workshop

The EASF Director, Dr. Abdillahi Omar Bouh, led a team of officials from the Standby Force's Logistics' Base, Force headquarters and EASF Liaison Office to a high level consultative workshop convened by the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 16th October 2018.

The workshop, organized for Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanisms (RMs), seeks to review the African Standby Force's (ASF) Peace Support Operations (PSO) Doctrine and identify substantive gaps between two doctrines; the ASF doctrine (2004) and the draft AU PSO Doctrine (2013). At the same time, participants will assess the current security threats facing the continent at large. The final task will be updating and revising both doctrines to establish one overarching AU PSO Doctrine that can provide guidance to current and future AU Missions.

The urgent need of developing multi-dimensional approaches to address contemporary challenges to peace and security, including the proliferation of radical and violent non-state actors has played a pivotal role in convention of the continental workshop.
