Election Observer Mission: General Elections in Seychelles

Category: News

The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) has deployed a team of 10 observers as part of the international election observer mission to the Republic of Seychelles. The observers arrived in Seychelles on the 9th  of October, 2020 and will observe the entire election process.

This is in line with the Decision of the 27th  Ordinary Policy Organs Meeting of Ministers of Defence and Security that urged the Secretariat to support the democratic process in all EASF Member States. Following the invitation by the Seychelles Government, EASF initiated an Integrated Mission Planning Process (IMPP) which took place in Nairobi, Kenya between 21st  – 25th  September, 2020 to plan for this election observer mission with the support of the Election Commission, the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Public Health Authority in Seychelles.

The international election observer mission consists of observers from Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Burundi, Sudan and Uganda. The Head of Mission is Mr. Dawit Assefa. The EASF election observer mission will meet with all presidential candidates, members of the civil society and other relevant stakeholders. The core mandate of the mission is to support the democratic process of the country with a clear message of peace, mutual respect and tolerance to its citizens.

Given the fact that EASF is the only international observer group accredited so far, EASF is willing to collaborate and share its findings and preliminary statement with other regional, international bodies, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Mechanisms (RMs) and international media.
