Election Observer Mission Kicks Off

Observers from the Eastern Africa Standby Force are expected in the Republic of Uganda on Sunday 10th January 2021. This will be the EASF’s first deployment mission for this year. A total of 21 observers from EASF Member States will form part of the team with

H. E. Ambassador Ahamada Hamadi from the Union of Comoros as the Head of Mission.

The EASF Election Observer Mission (EASF-EOM) was presented with the EASF Flag and their official observer toolkit today, Monday 7th January, 2021 in a short ceremony at the EASF Secretariat in Nairobi, Kenya. The Joint Chief of Staff Brig. Gen. PSC Osman Mohamed Abbas Osman pointed out the importance of this mission in strengthening the democratic principles in the region. On his part, the Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Dawit Assefa spoke about EASF’s last Observer Mission to the Seychelles and EASF’s role in promoting good governance and democracy in the region.

Uganda, being a member of the EASF, has accepted that EASF observes the Presidential and parliamentary elections due to take place on the 14th of this month. Similarly to previous observer missions, the observation methods will be based on the principles of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
