Strengthening Civilian Roles in Peace Operations: EASF Concludes Key Workshop in Mombasa

MOMBASA, KENYA – The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) concluded a successful Civilian National Focal Point Workshop held from 10th to 14th March 2025 in Mombasa, Kenya. The workshop brought together Focal Points from EASF Member States to enhance coordination and readiness for civilian roles in peace operations.

In his closing remarks, EASF Director Brigadier Paul Kahuria Njema thanked participants for their active contributions and emphasized the workshop’s importance in strengthening collaboration, building collective responsibility, and aligning strategies with Member States. He expressed appreciation to EASF partners, particularly the African Union, and acknowledged the Republic of Kenya, the people of Mombasa, and local authorities for their warm hospitality.

Brigadier General Stephen Kashure, EASF Joint Chief of Staff, challenged participants to reflect on working in a multidimensional, multicultural environment, highlighting teamwork and understanding as key values.

Dr. Leah Barasa, Head of the EASF Civilian Component, commended Member States for nominating highly qualified personnel and stressed the value of strong liaison between the Focal Points and the EASF Secretariat. She underscored their role in supporting the entire peace mission cycle—from deployment to drawdown and liquidation.

Key sessions covered roster verification, capacity building, and maintaining accurate data in the African Standby Capacity (ASC) database. These efforts aim to ensure the readiness of civilian experts for future missions.

National Focal Points shared progress updates and called for continued deployment of civilian personnel in ongoing peace operations.

The workshop marked a significant step toward strengthening civilian engagement in regional peace efforts, reinforcing the importance of integration, teamwork, and strategic cooperation.
