EASF Opens 34th Ordinary Policy Organs Meeting in Mogadishu
Mogadishu, Somalia – 15 July 2025 – The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) today launched its 34th Ordinary Policy Organs Meeting in Mogadishu under the theme: “EASF: Two Decades of Commitment to Promoting Regional Peace and Security.” The sessions will continue through 19 July 2025.
The meeting began with an Experts Working Group session, welcoming representatives from EASF member states. It marks the first time Somalia hosts this high-level regional meeting since joining the EASF framework in 2014.
Speaking at the opening, the State Minister of Defense of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Omar Gammar, welcomed delegates and underscored the importance of regional cooperation in peace and security. “Peacekeeping is a vital pillar for our region, and the role of EASF remains ever relevant in responding to the challenges we face,” he said, thanking the EASF Secretariat for their collaboration.
On behalf of the EASF Director, Brig. (Rtd) Paul Kahuria Njema, the Head of Peace Operations, Brig. Gen. Domitien Kabisa, emphasized the need for the organization to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing modern threats, including terrorism, violent extremism, human trafficking, and climate-induced crises.
“This gathering comes at a critical time for our region. Your candid engagements will be key in shaping strategic decisions,” Brig. Gen. Kabisa told delegates, adding that the meeting will review the 2021–2025 Strategic Plan and discuss the draft plan for 2026–2030.
The Chairperson of the Experts Working Group Colonel Ahmed Mohamed Hassan, noted the historic nature of the event. “Despite being our first time hosting such a forum, Somalia has shown remarkable commitment,” he said.
The meeting continues with deliberations that will feed into sessions by Chiefs of Defence Staff and Ministers later this week.
