Eastern Africa Standby Force and Africa International University Celebrate International Day of Peace

Nairobi, Kenya – The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) in partnership with the Africa International University (AIU) held a successful commemoration of the International Day of Peace on October 5, 2024, at the AIU campus. This year’s theme, "Cultivating a Culture of Peace: Youth and Climate Change," emphasized the critical roles that dialogue and understanding play in conflict resolution and the importance of youth in fostering peace and environmental protection.

The event gathered over 400 participants, including EASF staff, AIU students, civil society organizations, and youth leaders. Throughout the day, attendees engaged in a series of workshops, presentations, and discussions aimed at enhancing their understanding of peace processes and the significance of their contributions to society.

In his opening remarks, Brigadier General Domitien Kabisa, Head of Peace Operations at EASF, highlighted the organization's commitment to promoting peace and security across the region. He noted, "Peace is not merely the absence of conflict; it requires active participation and dialogue. It is our collective responsibility to cultivate a culture of peace, especially among our youth, who are the leaders of tomorrow."

Dr. Nelson Makanda, Africa international university Vice Chancellor, underscored the importance of engaging young people in these discussions, stating, "Youth are not only the future; they are the present. Their involvement in peace and environmental initiatives is essential for sustainable development."

Dr. Leah Barasa, the head of civilian component, said: "Culture conditions how people think and behave. EASF has the mandate of conflict prevention, conflict management and conflict

resolution; with civilian component having one line of operation of understanding local dynamics and engaging local stakeholders to address the root causes of conflict.”

The day’s activities included Drama, Songs and tree planting ceremony, symbolizing the connection between environmental health and peace, and various presentations that focused on the roles of youth in peacebuilding and climate action.

Workshops throughout the day provided participants with valuable insights into the intersections of peace, youth leadership, and environmental stewardship. The event concluded with a panel discussion featuring EASF and AIU representatives and youth leaders, who shared their perspectives on how to strengthen community engagement in peacebuilding efforts.
