Youth for peaceThe Youth for Peace Seminar, focusing on peace and environmental conservation, began on October 28, 2024, and will run for three days in the Somali capital. This event brings together 60 youth participants from Eastern African Standby Force (EASF) member states and the host nation, Somalia. In his opening remarks, Abdullahi Jamal Mohamed, the Director General of Youth and Sports of Somalia, welcomed participants and emphasized the vital role of youth in fostering peace and stability in the region.

He described the diverse assembly of young minds as essential to combating the threats of violence and division that affect communities. "This is a crucial moment in our shared history," he said. "It is our youth who possess the energy, creativity, and optimism necessary to change the narrative. You are the torchbearers of peace, and it is essential to empower you with the tools and knowledge to lead this charge."

Mohamed highlighted that young people in Eastern Africa are not just the leaders of tomorrow but also of today. He urged participants to use their insights and innovations to foster collaboration that transcends borders in pursuit of peace.

Mead Mubarak, Public Information Officer for the Eastern Africa Standby Force, noted the seminar's theme, "Continental Framework on Youth, Peace and Security," is timely and critical. "The challenges we face conflict, environmental degradation, and social unrest, require innovative solutions and collaborative efforts," she stated.

Mubarak stressed the importance of dialogue among youth to bridge diverse perspectives and foster mutual understanding. "The aim of this seminar is to create a dynamic platform for exchanging ideas and experiences that empower you to advocate for peace and security, while addressing the pressing need for environmental stewardship." She concluded by reaffirming their commitment to tree planting and marine conservation initiatives, emphasizing that these efforts are integral to their shared vision for a sustainable future.
