Eastern Africa Standby Force Hosts Induction Training and Workforce Planning Exercise in Nairobi
The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF), in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD), is conducting a week-long Induction Training and Workforce Planning Exercise from 8–12 September 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The training is held under the African Standby Capacity (ASC) framework and aims to strengthen Africa’s readiness for peace support operations. ACCORD, as a service provider to all Regional Economic Communities/Regional Mechanisms (RECs/RMs), is represented by Programme Officer Ms. Rumbidzaishe Matambo and Mr. Wandile Langa from the Peacekeeping Department.
Led by Mr. Eustace Chiwombe, AUC Head of Training, Evaluation and Capability Development, the program brings together newly appointed staff from EASF’s Civilian Component and Human Resources personnel. Key focus areas include improving roster selection, standardizing interview techniques, and enhancing training practices to support rapid and professional deployment.
“This gathering is both timely and strategic,” said Brigadier General Stephen Kashure, EASF Joint Chief of Staff. “It strengthens our collective readiness to prevent conflict, respond to crises, and sustain peace efforts.”
Dr. Leah Barasa, Head of the EASF Civilian Component, emphasized the importance of professionalizing peace operations through rigorous recruitment, training, and adherence to international humanitarian law and gender equality.
The training also introduced participants to the ASC framework and merit-based, gender-responsive recruitment processes. Sessions included practical interview techniques, assessment tools, and workforce planning aligned with AU priorities.
Mr. Chiwombe reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to maintaining credible and professional standby capacities.
The delegation also paid a courtesy visit to the Director’s Office to discuss ongoing collaboration and ASF capability development.
EASF expressed gratitude to AUC and ACCORD for their continued support in advancing Africa’s peace and security agenda.
