Enhancing Peace and Security in the Eastern Africa Region

EASF Celebrates International Peace Day

Category: News

Each year, the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21st September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

As an organization mandated to maintain peace in the entire Eastern Africa region, the Eastern Africa Standby Force joined the rest of the world in commemorating this important day. Owing to challenges posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic, active participation in this event was limited to a small number of members of staff, university students and a few pupils from Hope International School.

The commemoration at the Secretariat was led by the Head of Peace Operations' Department, Brig Gen Henry Isoke together with the Joint Chief of Staff, Brig Gen PSC Dr. Osman Mohamed Abbas Osman.

The hallmark of the day's celebrations included the delivery of a crash-course package covering matters of peace building and peacekeeping to the young audience present, who are undoubtedly some of the greatest stakeholders as leaders of tomorrow. Proper understanding of the cost of lack of peace could pave way for broader cultivation of the culture of maintaining peace and seeking non-confrontational approaches in order to address potentially erratic conflicts.

The ceremony came to a successful conclusion with members of staff handling over a small contribution package to officials from Hope International School.
