EASF in Regional Early Warning Workshop

The African Union’s Conflict Prevention and Early Warning Division of the Peace and Security Department in collaboration with the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, organized a three days' workshop on Conflict Prevention, Early Warning and Horizon Scanning from 20th to 22nd March 2019, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The aim of the workshop was to share the AU experiences on conflict prevention existing tools and methodologies, including the UNDP’s Conflict and development analysis, recovery and peace building assessment methodologies as well as to exchange information among the regional Early Warning institutions such as Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanism (RMs).
 
The Early Warning Workshop discussed on the issues of the existing tools, processes and priorities, comparative advantages of respective partners for both operational and structural prevention and how to conduct a joint country horizon scanning.

During the workshop, the Head of Peace Operations Department Brig. Albert Kendagor, emphasized that sharing the best practices of the Eastern Africa Standby Force Early Warning and Crisis Response Mechanisms, cooperation and sharing of vital information among the African Union, Regional Mechanisms and Regional Economic Communities could provide an avenue of timely intervention in order to avert potential conflicts in the region and beyond.

The Regional Early Warning institutions presented an overview of their work, sharing best experiences and pointing out their limitations.
 
The participants of the workshop are AU Early Warning Devision, UNDP, EASF, East Africa Community (EAC), Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), Community of Sahel- Saharan States (CEN-SAD), Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
